Milk production up 5pct y/y

HARARE, December 7 (The Source) – Zimbabwe’s raw milk production increased by 4,8 percent to 5,89 million litres in October, compared to 5,62 million litres recorded in the same period last year, latest figures show.
Latest data from the Dairy Services Department shows that retailed milk increased 10,63 percent to 571,139 litres in October from 516,269 litres in the same month last year while milk intake by processors increased 4,31 percent to 5,32 million litres from 5,1 million litres in the same period last year.
From January to October, raw milk production stood at 54,47 million litres compared to 54,25 million litres recorded last year.
In the month of September, raw milk production was 5,72 million litres compared to 5,58 million litres recorded in the same period last year.



The figures show that raw milk production in August increased 1,75 percent to 5,84 million litres compared to 5,74 recorded in prior year.
The country has four major dairy industry players: Dairibord Zimbabwe Limited, Nestle Zimbabwe, Dendairy, Alpha and Omega Diary and most of them have invested heavily in milk production.
In 2016, milk production increased by 13 percent to 65,36 million litres and the government is targeting milk production to rise to between 97 million to 100 million litres per annum by 2019.
