GWERU, August 4 (The Source) – Gweru City Council has launched legal proceedings against companies and individuals after arrears spiked to over $55 million.
Town Clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza said the council has to date issued 2,378 summons to defaulting companies and residents through the clerk of court in an effort to recover the money.
“Number of summons issued to date is 2,378 for amounts of $3,953,776. Number of default judgments to date is 1,394 amounting to $2 730 485 and the number of executions to date is 53. This means council can send a messenger of court and attach property to recover its money,” she told The Source.
She added that only domestic and commercial defaulters with debts from $500 upwards have been targetted.
As at June 30, residents owed council a total of $20,4 million for water and rates, non-domestic debtors stood at $16,1 million while defaults for rent and on commercial properties stood at $18,6 million.
