Mimosa mine accident claims one

HARARE, January 5 (The Source) – One miner was killed at the Mimosa Platinum Mine in Zvishavane on Monday  after he was struck by a drill on his head, the company said on Tuesday, four months after another miner died last August when he was crushed by a falling rock.

“The miner Charles Teketai was tramming ore when his Load, Haul and Dump machine (LHD) encroached into a drill steel barricade, resulting in one of the drill steels striking his head. He died from the subsequent injuries,” said head corporate affairs Elizabeth Chibanda in a statement on Tuesday.

Witnesses told The Source that Teketai died immediately.

In 2012, up to 178 miners at Mimosa were trapped in a shaft after a fire broke out.

Mimosa is a 50:50 joint venture between South African miners, Impala Platinum and Aquarius Platinum.
